Welcome to
the Korean Academy of Oral &
Maxillofacial Implantology
(KAOMI)
Jae-Hong Hwang,
President of KAOMI
On April 13, 1994, the Korean Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Implantology (KAOMI) was founded. With a firm commitment to becoming a leading organization in dental implant education and academic activities, KAOMI embarked on its ambitious journey. Since its inception, the academy has remained steadfast in its founding principles under the leadership of successive presidents, overcoming numerous challenges through unity and perseverance. In 2011, KAOMI was officially recognized as an incorporated association and designated as a tax-exempt donation organization by the government. Furthermore, in February 2014, it became an officially accredited academic division of the Korean Dental Association.
Alongside this institutional recognition, KAOMI has achieved remarkable growth, with an exponential increase in the number of member dentists. As of May 2024, the academy has grown into the largest dental society in Korea, boasting approximately 3,700 dental professionals as members.
Advancement of KAOMI’s Academic Activities
KAOMI’s academic conferences have expanded in both scale and content over the years. Since 2016, the annual Spring Academic Conference has been held as an international academic meeting, known as the iAO (International Academic Meeting of Osseointegration). This initiative has not only elevated KAOMI’s standing but also created synergy within the Korean dental implant industry, showcasing Korea’s expertise in dental implant research and technological advancements on a global stage.
Internally, KAOMI has worked to enhance its membership system. Since 2006, it has established an Excellent Membership Program, including a certification exam for outstanding members. Additionally, through specialized summer and winter lectures, the academy has introduced innovative educational formats and fostered a new generation of competitive lecturers. To date, KAOMI has produced more than 700 excellent members who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge and clinical expertise in implantology.
Beyond quantitative growth, KAOMI has also pursued qualitative advancements. The academy has published textbooks for systematic implant education targeted at both dentists and dental hygienists. Furthermore, KAOMI has consistently published its academic journal every quarter, achieving recognition as a Korea Research Foundation-listed journal. Moving forward, efforts are being made to elevate it to the SCI (Science Citation Index) level, strengthening its role as a globally recognized academic journal.
"Global Leading Implant Academy" – A Vision for the Future
As the 16th Executive Committee (2024-2026) embarks on its tenure, we have assembled a passionate and forward-thinking team of young dentists. Our goal is to bring KAOMI closer to both our dental professional members and the general public.
It is often said that personal growth stems from trials and setbacks. As many of you know, KAOMI has faced numerous challenges and hardships over the years. Thanks to the perseverance and dedication of our senior advisors and mentors, we are now able to launch the 16th Executive Committee with confidence.
Today, KAOMI faces new challenges that require a fresh vision for the future—a blueprint that will propel us to even greater heights. Over the next two years, we will focus on strengthening our internal foundation, ensuring that KAOMI evolves into a leading organization in the era of artificial intelligence. However, this vision cannot be realized by the president alone. KAOMI is composed of the most outstanding professionals in the field, and I hope that each director will embrace the spirit of explorers and pioneers as we work together to advance our respective fields.
I see my role as both a guide and a silent supporter, setting the direction and providing assistance from behind the scenes. By carrying forward the legacy of our esteemed predecessors, KAOMI will continue its efforts to not only be the best in Korea but to become a world-class dental implant society.
Thank you.
